Honoring the philanthropy of Julius "Dr. J" Erving and recognizing his outstanding accomplishments as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers.

WHEREAS, Mr. Erving hosts an annual golf classic, which has raised thousands of dollars for the Salvation Army of Philadelphia. Mr. Erving was first introduced to the game of basketball by the Salvation Army in his native Long Island, an experience that helped pave the way for his ascension to basketball greatness. Accordingly, Mr. Erving has chosen to recognize that debt by raising funds for The Salvation Army of Philadelphia, where he achieved the pinnacle of that greatness; and
WHEREAS, In addition to Mr. Erving's work through his annual golf classic, he also plays an active role in the Erving Youth Clinic. Through the past three years of the Erving Youth Clinic, Mr. Erving has helped over 400 children learn the game of basketball, as well as emphasize the importance of education and a healthy lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Erving's former coach Billy Cunningham observed, "As a basketball player, Julius was the first to truly take the torch and become the spokesman for the NBA. Julius was the first player I ever remember who transcended sports and was known by one name-Doctor". Julius Erving has built on his athletic legacy as a philanthropist, while never forgetting his Philadelphia roots; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Erving spent 11 seasons here in Philadelphia with the 76ers, becoming one of the most accomplished players in Sixers history and in the history of the NBA. During his 11 years in Philadelphia, Mr. Erving was selected as an All-Star every season, the league MVP in 1981, and a member of the All-NBA first team in five seasons. Mr. Erving scored over 30,000 points and ranks in the top-five all time list of highest scorers in the history of the NBA.
