WHEREAS, Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman has made history by becoming the first woman and the first Black Chief Executive Officer and President of the nation's oldest zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mogerman, who assumed the role on October 30, 2023, brings a wealth of experience and a clear commitment to the community, animal welfare, staff development, and operational excellence, making her the ideal President for the Philadelphia Zoo; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mogerman's leadership and vision have been evident throughout her esteemed career, including her role as Director of the St. Louis Zoo WildCare Park, where she oversaw the planning and development of a $230 million wildlife project; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mogerman's dedication to conservation, community engagement, and operational excellence aligns perfectly with the values and mission of the Philadelphia Zoo, which has been a pioneer in wildlife conservation and community involvement since its establishment in 1874; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mogerman's appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of zoo leadership, exemplifying progress towards greater diversity and inclusion in leadership positions within the zoo and aquarium fields; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mogerman's management style, characterized by inspiring her team, setting visions, and capitalizing on strengths, will undoubtedly propel the Philadelphia Zoo into a model for zoos of the future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes and honors Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman for her leadership as the first female and first Black Chief Executive Officer and President of the Philadelphia Zoo.
