Honoring and commending and thanking St. Timothy's Episcopal Church on the occasion of its 150th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, St. Timothy's has maintained a central role in the Roxborough community since J. Vaughan Merrick and D. Rodney King founded the church as a Sunday school a century and a half ago (in 1859); and

WHEREAS, The cornerstone of the church building was laid in 1862. Since then, St. Timothy's has been through several major expansions, reaching its present configuration of buildings in 1924; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, the parish has meticulously maintained the church's beautiful building and grounds. St. Timothy's gothic revival architecture and rich history merited a prominent place in Roger W. Moss' Historic Sacred Places in Philadelphia; and

WHEREAS, At St. Timothy's, Worship is vital yet still traditional, enhanced by a wonderful organ and choir. The Church's signature bell tower contains eight bells which are rung by hand at each service; and

WHEREAS, The Church founded St. Timothy's Hospital and House of Mercy in 1890. This evolved into Roxborough Memorial Hospital; and

WHEREAS, During the last century, the Church's sense of mission has extended well beyond the neighborhood. Ministries to the poor and needy in Philadelphia, in Appalachia, and across the world are administered and supported at St. Timothy's; and

WHEREAS, St. Timothy's features a membership that is diverse in age, ethnicity and socio-economic status. The Church also sponsors an active and growing youth group; and

WHEREAS, Philadelphia City Council looks forward to another 150 years of excellent service and good works from St. Timothy's; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it honors and commends and thanks St. Timothy's Episcopal Church on the occasion of its 150th Anniversary.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church as further ...
