Recognizing November 17, 2024 as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Safety Victims is a global event that is held every third Sunday of November to honor individuals who lost their lives as result of traffic violence; and

WHEREAS, Traffic deaths are a leading cause of preventable deaths, disproportionately harming people who are walking and biking, and in particular people of color and people in low-income communities; and

WHEREAS; Every year, millions more road victims globally are added to the current toll of over 50 million killed and hundreds of millions injured since the first road death. In Philadelphia, the World Day of Remembrance acknowledges all those who have been lost from traffic violence since last year's event, and focuses on the alarming rise in fatal hit-and-runs. Over 70% of all fatal hit-and-runs in 2024 have been people walking; and

WHEREAS, The World Day of Remembrance 2024 is organized on the theme "Remember. Support. Act," to focus on creating streets that are made for people to live and thrive. The objectives of the World Day of Remembrance are to remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads; acknowledge and draw attention to emergency services and better support for road traffic victims and their families; and promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries; and

WHEREAS, In Philadelphia, The World Day of Remembrance 2024 will be recognized on Sunday, November 17th, 2024. An event held by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Families for Safe Streets Greater Philadelphia, and other coalition partners will honor the people who have lost their lives to traffic violence in the Philadelphia area, stand in solidarity with their families, and demand safer streets for all; now, therefore, be it
