Authorizing the Committee on Children and Youth to hold hearings -addressing the findings of the Enough is Enough Students (EIE) Against Gun Violence Campaigns survey which aims to address the experiences of Philadelphia high school students surrounding gun violence in the city.
Body
WHEREAS, According to the Office of the City Controller, 57% of shooting victims were under the age of 30 and 7% were younger than 18; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia youth are continuously being impacted by gun violence yet when determining prevention strategies geared toward them they are absent from the conversations; and
WHEREAS, The Enough is Enough Campaign was created to bring young people into the conversation and the advocacy process aimed at gun violence prevention with a specific focus on high school students; and
WHEREAS, The Enough is Enough campaign steering committee has launched a survey in an effort to collect data on the high school student experience with gun violence; and
WHEREAS, There have been over 1,300 survey responses from middle and high school students all over Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Collaboration and action from decision makers is important in reviewing the data and addressing the findings and potential solutions; and
WHEREAS, Involvement of the committee on children and youth is important in the collaboration effort of EIE in order to work to find potential solutions to gun violence prevention the City of Philadelphia, now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it authorizes The Committee on Children and Youth to hold public hearings addressing the findings of the Enough is Enough Students (EIE) Against Gun Violence Campaigns survey which aims to address the experiences of Philadelphia high school students surrounding gun violence in the city and to hear recommendations for how to abate this threat to Philadelphia’s children.
