Requesting the School Reform Commission to provide sensitivity training to all school bus attendants providing services to disabled children to allow them to better service the needs of their handicapped passengers.
Body
WHEREAS, At a public hearing on the treatment of the disabled, Council was informed that at times school bus monitors dealing with disabled children are rude, verbally abusive, inconsiderate, and insensitive to their conditions and needs; and
WHEREAS, It is important that disabled children being transported to and from school be treated in a most considerate and respectful manner; and
WHEREAS, A person trying to take care of the needs of a disabled child has to be able to service all of their needs in a respectful, humane, sensitive, and considerate manner; and
WHEREAS, If a person that is providing supervisory services to a handicapped child does not do so in this manner it can cause irreversible damage; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that all handicapped children be treated with the same level of respect as all able bodied children; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the School Reform Commission is requested to provide sensitivity training to all school bus attendants providing services to disabled children to allow them to better service the needs of their handicapped passengers.
