Resolution celebrating May 5th to 9th, 2024, as Black Teacher Appreciation Week in the City of Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia previously declared May 9th as Black Teacher Appreciation Day, honoring the many Black educators who teach in the many educational institutions in the City; and

 

WHEREAS, Having a Black teacher positively impacts a student’s education and sets them up for success in their futures. According to a study by David Blazar at the University of Maryland, having a Black teacher improved students’ math and reading test scores and decreased chronic absenteeism by roughly 60%, the same rates applied to Black and non-Black students; and

 

WHEREAS, The same study showed Black educators brought a growth mindset and positive contributions to their students’ education. Black teachers allowed their students to increase their engagement and understanding of their curriculum; and

 

WHEREAS, The number of Black educators in Philadelphia has declined since 2000. According to the Pennsylvania Capital-Star, the number of Black educators in the City had declined from 4,059 to 2,866 by 2022. These educators left due to discrimination and a lack of resources in their schools; and

 

WHEREAS, It is important that Philadelphia honors its Black educators and continues to support them through their tireless commitment to their students and institutions. Black teachers allow students to be seen, understood, and give them the highest opportunities possible; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby celebrate the Week of May 5, 2025, to May 9, 2025, as Black Teacher Appreciation Week and honor all the hardworking, committed Black educators in Philadelphia educational institutions.
