WHEREAS, Derrick Tawheed Haleem Gant, known professionally as Phat Geez, was born and raised on the 1200 Block of North LeCount Street, formerly North Taney Street; and
WHEREAS, Phat Geez contributed to Philadelphia’s hip-hop culture, gaining recognition through his 2014 song “Life,” featuring fellow Philadelphia artist Meek Mill, and his mixtape “Cut From a Different Cloth”; and
WHEREAS, Phat Geez used his platform to speak against gun violence, including through his song “No Gunzone,” released shortly before his death, which called attention to the violence affecting Philadelphia’s neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, On March 17, 2024, his life was tragically cut short by gun violence at the age of twenty-eight, leaving his family, friends, neighbors, and listeners mourning the loss of a young artist whose talent and concern for his community had touched their lives; and
WHEREAS, His commitment to his community extended beyond music, with loved ones remembering his generosity and efforts to feed people experiencing homelessness, embodying his loving spirit and dedication to uplifting those around him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the 1200 Block of North LeCount Street is hereby honorarily also named “Derrick ‘Phat Geez’ Gant Way” to honor the life and legacy of Derrick Tawheed Haleem Gant.
