Title

Authorizing the Committee on Legislative Oversight to hold hearings to determine the current state of planning and readiness for the traffic flows caused by events and visitors during the historic 250th Anniversary celebration of the United States and the many events coming to town.

 

Body

WHEREAS; 2026 will see millions of additional visitors including an expected six hundred thousand extra visitors in six weeks between the World Cup and the Major League Baseball All Star Week, and

 

WHEREAS; With a compact colonial era grid, natural boundaries and a high population density, Philadelphians traditionally sees over 1,000 hours per year lost to traffic congestion, and

 

WHEREAS; Increased vehicle  traffic, road closures for events and security, and a transit system in limbo risk leaving residents stuck in epic traffic jams and businesses unable to service customers and move needed supplies and goods promptly, and

 

WHEREAS; City Council has a responsibility to convene stakeholders such as neighbors, businesses, schools and students, along with experts to determine if the city is ready to handle increased traffic volumes and what efforts can still be taken to make 2026 a fun, enjoyable year for all Philadelphians, THEREFOR, be it,

 

RESOLVED, That the Committee on Legislative Oversight be authorized to hold hearings to determine the current state of planning and readiness for the traffic flows caused by events and visitors during the historic 250th Anniversary celebration of the United States and the many events coming to town in 2026.
