Mourning the death and honoring the memory of the Honorable Harvey N. Schmidt.
Body
WHEREAS, Harvey Schmidt was born on November 13, 1914 in South Carolina; and
WHEREAS, He lived in Philadelphia for most of his life and was held in highest esteem throughout the City of Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Judge Schmidt graduated from Temple University Law School and was one of only two black men admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar Association in 1944; and
WHEREAS, He served his country in the United States Army, received numerous decorations for bravery and was a judge of the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania, Court of Common Pleas, and had a reputation for fairness, intelligence and compassion; and
WHEREAS, He was also a loving husband to our friend Lois Wells Schmidt, a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, a terrific neighbor and a forty-year member of St. Barbara's Catholic Church; and
WHEREAS, On May 2, 2002, God in his wisdom took him from our midst, causing sadness beyond words for his loving wife, Lois, and his dear son, Harvey E. Schmidt; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we mourn the death and honor the memory of the Honorable Harvey N. Schmidt; and
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Lois Wells Schmidt as this legislative body mourns the death and celebrates the life of Judge Harvey N. Schmidt. To those who mourn, we extend our most profound condolences, and the hope that they will find comfort in the peace this most remarkable man has now surely found.
