The Council of the City of Philadelphia is pleased and proud to recognize and celebrate the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra's 75th Anniversary.
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra was founded in 1939 and is one of the nation's oldest youth orchestra and college preparatory music education institutions for gifted and talented students; and
WHEREAS, Under the guidance of a prestigious faculty that includes members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, students grow as individuals with a keen sense of discipline and positive social interaction which prepares them for many aspects of living a successful life and provides them an impressive college preparatory credential; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia Youth Orchestra offers classical musical performances throughout the Greater Philadelphia region each year and is a frontrunner in supporting music education for children from Philadelphia's most vulnerable and under-resourced neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia Youth Orchestra gives students the opportunity to showcase their wonderful talents several times a year in a very unique and rewarding experience being able to perform at Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts; and
WHEREAS, For the past 17 years, many performances from the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra organization have helped raise funds for charitable organizations such as Reach Out and Read at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, MANNA (Metropolitan AIDS Neighborhood Nutritional Alliance), the Voices for Children Foundation, St. James School, Philadelphia, and the Youth Work Foundation of The Union League of Philadelphia; and
