WHEREAS, Black History Month is a dedicated time for education, reflection, and recognition of the contributions, struggles, and triumphs of Black individuals and communities throughout history. In Philadelphia, many significant places serve as cultural and historical landmarks, preserving the legacy of African American culture and providing spaces for education and reflection. The Council of the City of Philadelphia comes together to honor these living landmarks for their lasting contributions to the Black community; and

WHEREAS, The Belmont Mansion in Fairmount Park is a historic site that honors Philadelphia's Black history. Once home to abolitionist and educator Rebecca Cole, one of the first African American women to earn a medical degree, the mansion commemorates the contributions of African Americans in the fight for freedom and equality. It stands as a symbol of resilience and empowerment in the city's rich cultural heritage; and

WHEREAS, The Blockson Collection at Temple University is committed to preserving and showcasing African American history, art, and culture through its exhibits and educational programs, educating the public on the contributions of the Black community to the nation's history. Founded by Charles Blockson, the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple is one of the most prestigious collections of African American artifacts in the U.S. The collection houses over 500,000 items relating to the global Black experience. Located in Sullivan Hall; and

WHEREAS, The Lest We Forget Museum is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the African American experience. The museum highlights the struggles and achievements of Black Americans, particularly during slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. Through powerful exhibits and educ...
