WHEREAS, John's Roast Pork was established in 1930 along the B&O railroad at Snyder Avenue and Weccacoe Street; and
WHEREAS, For decades, the shop has served hot sandwiches including John's roast pork from the family's secret recipe; and
WHEREAS, In late March, John Bucci was notified by the James Beard Foundation that his sandwich shop had won the prestigious America's Classic Award; and
WHEREAS, The James Beard Foundation is a national not-for-profit organization based in New York City dedicated to furthering the practice and appreciation of the culinary arts in America; and
WHEREAS, Each spring, more than 600 culinary professionals nominate and bestow awards to select restaurants, chefs and food journalists throughout the country; and
WHEREAS, On May 8, 2006, John Bucci and his mother, Vonda, attended the James Beard Foundation awards ceremony at the New York Marriot Marquis were they met culinary celebrities and were presented with the Mid-Atlantic America's Classic Award; and
WHEREAS, The America's Classic Award is a national honor and one of the highest in the food industry; and
WHEREAS, This is not the first time John's Roast Pork has been in the spotlight. In 2002, it was rated best cheesesteak in the City by The Philadelphia Inquirer, and in April 2006, food critic Craig LaBan named the sandwiches as his farewell food of choice if he ever had to leave Philadelphia; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does hereby recognize John Bucci, his family and John's Roast Pork for winning the prestigious 2006 James Beard Foundation Mid-Atlantic America's Classic Award.
