WHEREAS, Tim Witherspoon, Philadelphia-native, born on December 27, 1957, is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1979 to 2003; and

WHEREAS, Witherspoon began his boxing career at the age of 20 and, as a result of his natural talent and athleticism, quickly made a name for himself in the boxing world. After a brief stint in the amateur league, Witherspoon entered the professional boxing realm in 1979, and quickly amassed a series of victories, showcasing his knockout power and defensive skills; and

WHEREAS, In 1984, Witherspoon successfully earned his first world title. This first world championship title, WBC Heavyweight Champion, solidified his place as a respected heavyweight boxer; and

WHEREAS, That same year, Witherspoon lost his title in a close match. However, in 1986, a determined Witherspoon won the WBA heavyweight title, and went on to defend that title once more a few months later; and

WHEREAS, Following his two world titles, Witherspoon remained active in the ring throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, and made his final professional appearance in 2003; and

WHEREAS, Witherspoon retired with an impressive career record of 55 wins, 13 losses, and 1 draw. Known for his resilience, Witherspoon was one of the few heavyweights of his era to compete against a wide array of top fighters, earning the nickname "Terrible Tim" for his tough, relentless fighting style.; and

WHEREAS, In 2014, Witherspoon published his book, Tim Witherspoon, Terrible Times, which details the ups and downs of his celebrated career; and

WHEREAS, Today, Witherspoon resides near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he trains boxers, including his son, lightweight Tim Witherspoon Jr. and others, passing down his knowledge and legacy to the next generation; now, therefore, be it
