WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson began drawing the people she was supposed to be reporting on, realizing that cartooning combined her interests in art and politics without taxing her interest in spelling; and
WHEREAS, In addition to Signe Wilkinson's five cartoons a week for the Daily News, she has drawn Shrubbery, a hybrid comic strip/editorial cartoon that focused on both the botanical and political landscape; and
WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson was awarded the 1991 Berryman Award; and
WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson was awarded the 1992 Pulitzer Prize, being the first woman to win the prestigious award; and
WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson was awarded the 1997 and 2001 Overseas Press Club Award; and
WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson was awarded the 2002 RFK Award; and
WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson's most cherished honor was being named "the Pennsylvania State Vegetable Substitute" by the former speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1989; and
WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson's editorial cartoons are syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group; and
WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson was the 1994-1995 President of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, a job Molly Ivins' likens to running a nursery school; and
WHEREAS, Signe Wilkinson has demonstrated her intelligence, depth, and humor, through the practice of her profession, and has thus positively influenced, political, social, and moral agenda of our City; and
