WHEREAS, On April 16, 2007, 32 people were massacred, and several were severely injured by a gunman on the campus of Virginia Tech in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history; AND

WHEREAS, This legislative body express its sincere condolences and offers its thoughts and prayers to the families, friends and all individuals who are mourning for those who lost their lives innocently in this terrible tragedy; AND

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia is home to numerous world class colleges and Universities which offer higher education to over 107,000 students; AND

WHEREAS, Their is deep concern throughout The City of Philadelphia and the United States regarding the safety and well-being of our future leaders while they obtain their respective degrees; AND

WHEREAS, It is imperative to address the questions, and concerns related to safety issues of the students, parents, and professors, who frequent the colleges and universities in Philadelphia; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby Remembers, Memorializes, Honors, and Mourns the 32 people slain at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, and authorizes City Council's Committee on Public Safety to hold public hearings to investigate how safe the College Campuses in The City of Philadelphia are; and, in furtherance of such investigation, authorizes the issuance of subpoenas to compel the attendance of witnesses and the production of documents to the full ext...
