WHEREAS, Kevin Millwood was acquired by the Phillies in an offseason trade with the hope that he would be one of the top pitchers on the staff; and

WHEREAS, on April 27th the Philadelphia Phillies hosted the San Francisco Giants on a beautiful sunny day in Veterans Stadium with Kevin Millwood taking the mound as the starting pitcher for the Fightin' Phils; and

WHEREAS, when the 40,000 plus fans poured through the turnstiles they expected a great game between two of the National League's best teams in this young season; and

WHEREAS, the fans got more than a great game, they got one of the best games ever pitched by a Phillies since the franchise's inception in 1883; and

WHEREAS, when Ricky Ledee hit a home run in the first inning it was all the runs the Phillies would need that day as Kevin Millwood pitched a gem; and

WHEREAS, at the end of the day, Kevin Millwood had a box score line that read, no runs, no hits, and ten strikeouts; and

WHEREAS, in the history of the Philadelphia Phillies only nine pitchers have pitched a "No Hitter" with Kevin's name being the latest added to this select list; and

WHEREAS, it had been almost twelve years since the last time a Phillies, Tommy Greene, pitched a no-hit game; and

WHEREAS, only once previously in Veterans Stadium history, when Terry Mulholland threw one on August 15, 1990, had a Phillies pitcher thrown a no-hitter; and

WHEREAS, he was once quoted as saying, "I think everybody who pitches in the big leagues, or any league, should want to be the best..."; and

WHEREAS, on April 27, 2003 Kevin Millwood showed that he belongs in the class known as "the best"; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor Kevin Millwood for pitching a "No-Hitter" on April 27, 2003.
