Recognizing October 2023 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Philadelphia and honoring those who have fought and continue to fight against breast cancer.

WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed form of cancer among women and has the second highest rate of incidence in cancer-related deaths. According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 13% of American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetimes; and

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society's estimates that in 2023, 297,790 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States, and about 43,700 women will die from breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, Breast cancer death rates have been decreasing steadily since 1989, for an overall decline of 43% through 2020. This decline is due largely to the availability of new and improved breast cancer treatments and the development of more robust early-detection methods. These scientific advancements are signs of major progress in the field if cancer treatment and stand as testaments to the tireless work of the advocacy community; and

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of early detection, prevention, treatment, and support for individuals affected by breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month aims to educate the public about the risks and warning signs of breast cancer, encourage regular screenings and mammograms, promote healthy lifestyle choices such as a balanced diet and regular physical activity, and provide information and resources to those facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Early detection through these methods is crucial to improving breast cancer outcomes, enabling timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and increased chances of survival; and
