Authorizing the Committee on Commerce and Economic Development to conduct public hearings on providing additional funding for the Philadelphia Film Society.
Body
WHEREAS, In 2001, the Philadelphia Film Society was established as a non-profit organization that actively engages the community in film and media events; and
 
WHEREAS, The Film Society sponsors two world-class program events: Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema and Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival; and
 
WHEREAS, These two film festivals draw more than 60,000 filmgoers annually from around the world, generating a substantial revenue windfall for the Philadelphia economy; and
 
WHEREAS, The Film Society works with area businesses and non-profits to promote additional activities in the Philadelphia area that encourage many of the filmgoers to extend their stay in Philadelphia and to take in the wonderful amenities the City has to offer; and
 
WHEREAS, These film festivals also bolster Philadelphia's reputation as a diverse and sophisticated international cultural center as well as an important venue for the film production industry; and
 
WHEREAS, The City should continue to support the Film Society by providing more funding for its ongoing enrichment and educational activities that truly benefit all Philadelphians; now therefore
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That City Council's Committee on Commerce and Economic Development is hereby authorized to conduct public hearings on providing additional funding for the Philadelphia Film Society.
