Supporting the Principles of the Earth Charter and Recognizing the Second Philadelphia Earth Charter Summit on September 28, 2002.

WHEREAS, For over a decade, hundreds of groups and tens of thousands of individuals worldwide have been involved in the drafting of the Earth Charter, whose principles present a framework of sustainable development with guidelines for achieving it; and
WHEREAS, The Earth Charter promotes four core principles: respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity; social and economic justice; and democracy, non-violence and peace; and
WHEREAS, In light of recent events, it is appropriate to recognize the Earth Charter in support of people working together in peace in pursuit of new solutions for a stabilized, secure, prosperous, and just world for all; and
WHEREAS, The Earth Charter has been endorsed nationwide by a wide variety of individuals, groups and organizations including the U.S. Conference of Mayors, National Wildlife Foundation, the Humane Society of the United States and Physicians for Social Responsibility; and
WHEREAS, On September 28, 2002, at the Irvine Auditorium on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, the Second Philadelphia Earth Charter Summit will be held with goals to motivate local community activism, build coalitions and inspire individuals to carry forward a democratic agenda; now therefore
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby supports the principles of the Earth Charter and recognizes the Second Philadelphia Earth Charter Summit on September 28, 2002.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the organizers of the Philadelphia Earth Charter Summit as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
