Recognizing May, 2014 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

WHEREAS, The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition was started in 1956 under Dwight D. Eisenhower. Initially, the Council was specific to the fitness of minors and was named the President's Council of Youth Fitness but over the years evolved to become the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition; and
WHEREAS, The month of May has been recognized as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month since 1983; and
WHEREAS, The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition as well as businesses, municipalities and companies nationwide honor May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, providing awareness for not only a healthy month but also a healthy life; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, City Council, in a partnership with Health Promotion Council and the Department of Parks and Recreation, will launch Philly Play on May 1st on the plaza of the Municipal Services Building. Its mission is to promote fun accessible family fitness and wellness. The program will focus on providing both children and adults access to free and low cost physical activity resources in our City's recreation centers. Philly Play will communicate the importance of physical activity as a preventative health measure to elementary aged children and their parents; and
WHEREAS, By encouraging families to make small changes to increase their activity levels, they can achieve healthier lifestyles. To realize these positive lifestyle changes, National Physical Fitness and Sports Month encourages families to lead more physically active lives by accessing the many active living resources throughout Philadelphia. Philly Play will also encourage people to better utilize our City's recreational resources and innovative programming, specifically as it relates to our recreation centers, now, therefore, be it
