Recognizing the 300th Anniversary of The Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia. The Nation's Oldest Trade Guild and the Stewards of Carpenters' Hall

WHEREAS, The Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia was founded in 1724 as a trade guild for the City's Master Builders, and the Company's early members built many of the City's significant 18th-century structures, including Independence Hall, Pennsylvania Hospital, and the steeple of Christ Church; and

WHEREAS, The Company contributed to the development of Philadelphia by setting standards for quality construction, training apprentices in the building trades, and providing mutual aid to its members; and

WHEREAS, The Company built Carpenters' Hall as its meeting place in the early 1770s and has preserved and maintained it continuously ever since as one of the nation's premiere examples of Georgian design and architecture and the Hall now enjoys National Historic Landmark status; and

WHEREAS, Carpenters' Hall hosted the First Continental Congress in fall 1774, where 56 delegates including George Washington, John Adams, and Patrick Henry met to form a colonial coalition that laid the foundation for the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence and is therefore an important contributor to Philadelphia's tourism economy and the upcoming America 250 commemorations; and

WHEREAS, The Carpenters' Company today is a professional association of the region's leading architects, engineers and contractors who continue to contribute to the development of the City's-built environment and nurture the next generation of building professionals through scholarships and educational resources and programs; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes the 300th Anniversary of The Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia.
