WHEREAS, The Washington D.C., Martin Luther King, Jr., National Memorial was created to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, The Memorial Project is leading a collaborative funding, design, and construction process in the creation of a memorial to honor Dr. King's national and international contributions to world peace through non-violent social change; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King championed a movement that draws fully from the deep well of America's potential for freedom, opportunity, and justice; and
WHEREAS, His vision of America is captured in his message of hope and possibility for a future anchored in dignity, sensitivity, and mutual respect; and
WHEREAS, There have been many members of a whole host of diverse communities that have given so much to the foundation; and
WHEREAS, Just to recognize a few of these champions of Civil Rights, Dr. Ed Jackson, Harry E. Johnson, Joel J. Horowitz, Richard Marshall, Rod Gillum, Andrew Young, Darryl R. Matthews, Alfred C. Bailey, Jack Kemp and Thomas J. Hilfiger have contributed greatly; and
WHEREAS, The vision of a memorial in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. is one that captures the essence of his message, a message in which he so eloquently affirms the commanding tenants of the American Dream - Freedom, Democracy and Opportunity for All.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That City Council Hereby Recognize, Honor, And Celebrate the Washington D.C., Martin Luther King, Jr., National Memorial - For Its creation of a memorial to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's., national and international contributions to world peace through non-violent social change.
