Honoring Morjorie Newlin.

WHEREAS, The Council of the City of Philadelphia is pleased and proud to honor Ms. Morjorie Newlin, an internationally renowned bodybuilder, who at the age of 84, will represent the City of Philadelphia in the World Physique Federation bodybuilding show being held in Philadelphia, November 11 to 13, 2004; and
WHEREAS, Morjorie Newlin will be competing in the World Physique Federation bodybuilding show, which held the first Mr. Universe Title in Philadelphia on September 17, 1947. The show is being hosted by the Mayor's Office on Health and Fitness, the Philadelphia Sports Congress, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Reverend Dr. Richard Brown, III of Rivers Gym; and
WHEREAS, In November 1991, Ms. Newlin, a retired nurse, became concerned about her health and age-related illnesses and began lifting weights, which led to her second career as a bodybuilder at the age of 72; and
WHEREAS, Morjorie Newlin won her first bodybuilding competition in May 1992 and has participated in over 40 competitions and has won 40 national and international trophies; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Newlin has appeared on several local and national television shows including but not limited to "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "The View," and "The Today Show," where she has promoted health and physical fitness; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Newlin lives by the motto of "one day at a time and know your own body," maintains her health and fitness for her independence, and believes that each of us has been given a gift, the fabulous piece of machinery known as the human body; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby congratulate Ms. Morjorie Newlin on her success as a bodybuilder and in the World Physique Federation bodybuilding show.
