Declaring October 4, 2000 as Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Day and honoring The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for its splendid efforts with finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and myeloma, and improving the quality of life of patients and their families.
Body
WHEREAS, In 1999, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society marked the 50th Anniversary of its fight to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and myeloma; and

WHEREAS, Leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and myeloma are cancers that affect the blood-forming and infection-fighting organs - the bone marrow and lymph nodes; and

WHEREAS, The Society's principal activities include awarding research grants, providing financial and emotional assistance to patients and distributing educational information to various groups; and

WHEREAS, The Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter provides patient services to more than 1,100 children and adults registered for the Society's financial assistance and family support programs throughout the region; and

WHEREAS, In 1999, the Society as a whole raised $123 million dollars with the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter raising $3.1 million. The Society awarded 263 grants to support and encourage young scientists to devote their careers to seeking cures for blood-related cancers. The Eastern Chapter has awarded grants to researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Children's Hospital, the Wistar Institute and the University of Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, On October 4, 2000, the 12th Annual Port Connection will take place at the Cruise Terminal Building at the Philadelphia Naval Base. This event has raised nearly $300,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we declare October 4, 2000 as Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Day and honor the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for its splendid efforts with finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and myeloma and imp...
