Recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month and the Latino Employees of the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month was established in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson and runs from September 15th to October 15th; and
 
WHEREAS, The Latino population in the United States has grown to over 45.5 Million and is largest and fastest growing minority community in the country; and
 
WHEREAS, The Latino community in Philadelphia grew over 45% to 228,000 in the 2000 census at which time representing 6.5% of the population; and
 
WHEREAS, Latinos are also a vibrant and growing segment of Philadelphia's population, economy and municipal workforce; and
 
WHEREAS, Over the last 8 years the number of Latinos employed by Philadelphia government has grown by nearly 50% and now numbers nearly 1,500; and
 
WHEREAS, Latinos have made great contributions to the diversity and vitality of Philadelphia and they are a important part of our City's workforce; now therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED THAT, The Philadelphia City Council hereby congratulates and honors Hispanic Heritage Month and the 1,500 Latinos who proudly serve the City of Philadelphia. We thank your commitment to the City of Philadelphia and applaud the growth of Latino's in our workforce. We hope that Philadelphia's Latino community continues to grow and prosper.
