WHEREAS, September 16, 2025, marks the third anniversary of the death of Mahsa (Jina) Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman who died in the custody of Iran's "morality police" after being detained for allegedly violating the country's strict dress code; and
WHEREAS, Mahsa Amini's death under suspicious circumstances sparked nationwide and global protests, igniting a movement led by women and young people under the rallying cry "Woman, Life, Freedom" ("Zan, Zendegi, Azadi" in Persian); and
WHEREAS, The Iranian government's violent crackdown on peaceful demonstrators in the wake of her death has drawn international condemnation, with reports of widespread arrests, censorship, and the use of deadly force against protestors; and
WHEREAS, Despite the risk of harm, countless Iranians, particularly women, continue to stand courageously for justice, freedom of expression, and bodily autonomy, embodying Mahsa Amini's legacy and the enduring power of resistance in the face of oppression; and
WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia, as a City founded on the principles of liberty and human rights, stands in solidarity with the women and people of Iran in their pursuit of equality and justice, and reaffirms its commitment to defending human rights across the globe; and
WHEREAS, Mahsa Amini's story serves as a reminder that the struggle for women's rights and human dignity transcends borders, and that the universal demand for freedom and justice must always be met with support, empathy, and action; now, therefore, be it
