Declaring June 2012 as Local Independent Media Month in Philadelphia and Recognizing the Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) for their work in Promoting Economic and Social Justice.

WHEREAS, Philadelphia has a rich and dedicated network of non-corporate, home-grown media; and
WHEREAS, An uncompromised press is invaluable to a free and democratic society; and
WHEREAS, These local news outlets serve our community with a special excellence and commitment; and
WHEREAS, Media mergers, corporate ownership and budget cuts threaten the integrity of local news coverage; and
WHEREAS, Local independent media outlets build the public consensus needed to bring about change; and
WHEREAS, Free and independent media should be recognized as a key dimension of efforts to eradicate poverty, advocating for basic human rights, a stronger civil society, political transparency, support to education and sustainable livelihoods; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, THAT THE PHILADELPHIA CITY COUNCIL, Hereby declares June 2012 as Local Independent Media Month and recognizes The Philadelphia Tribune, The Philadelphia Record, Northeast Times, Chestnut Hill Local, Germantown Courier, Jewish Exponent, Olney Times, Aliva, City Paper, Philly Weekly, Philadelphia Gay News, Southwest Globe Times, Spirit, Star Publications, Sunday Sun, Metro Chinese Weekly, Weekly Press, Westside Weekly, Neighborhood Leader, Metro, Mt. Airy Independent, China Viet News, Rang Dong Sunrise Magazine, China Press Weekly, South Philadelphia Review, Germantown Chronicle, Germantown Leader, Milestones, Media Mobilizing Project, Green City Journal, WRTI, Al Dia, WXPN, DUTV, Independent Media Center, Dong-A Daily, Impacto, Philadelphia Public School Notebook, El Hispano, Brazilian News Week, The Bulletin, Philadelphia Business Journal, The Temple News, The Daily Pennsylvanian, The Triangle, Philadelphia News, WURD and WKDU.
