Title
Requesting that candidates immediately remove all political posters from all public property, including light poles, buildings, other street furniture and fixtures, and trees.
Body
WHEREAS, Section 10-501 of The Philadelphia Code allows the placement of temporary signs, including political posters, on public property so long as these signs are erected in a secure fashion and do not impair the safety of pedestrian or vehicular traffic; and
WHEREAS, Under The Philadelphia Code, all such signs shall be removed within thirty (30) days following the election; and
WHEREAS, It is not unusual for campaign posters to remain affixed to utility poles and trees well beyond the thirty day limit; and
WHEREAS, For years, Philadelphians have been engaged in a continuing struggle to improve the quality of life in our City by working together to clean our streets and keep our neighborhoods clean; and
WHEREAS, Although some people maintain that political posters on trees and other public property are an expression of free speech, while others say it is more trash that only detracts from the beauty of our neighborhoods and defeats the many hours of hard work by so many Philadelphians; now therefore
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Ask that all candidates demonstrate their respect for the citizens of Philadelphia by immediately removing all political posters from all public property, including light poles, buildings, other street furniture and fixtures, and trees prior to the 30-day grace period provided under The Philadelphia Code.
