Also naming the 800 block of Rhawn Street "Hugh Joseph McIntyre Way" in recognition of his sacrifice during the 1975 Gulf Oil Refinery Fire.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Hugh was born on November 19, 1922, to John and Mary McIntyre. He grew up in Kensington and served as an altar boy at St. Veronica’s Church. Inspired by his uncle, Hugh always knew he wanted to be a firefighter. First, though, Hugh served his country with honor in World War II and was honorably discharged as a proud veteran; and

 

WHEREAS, Hugh later became a dedicated firefighter for the City of Philadelphia and Engine 56. Hugh was an active member of St. Cecilia’s Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in the community of Fox Chase. To his neighbors, Hugh was more than just a firefighter, he was a friend who was always ready to lend a helping hand; and

 

WHEREAS, Hugh was a 22-year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department and was preparing to retire. As a firefighter at Engine 56 in Fox Chase, Hugh’s dedication to his fellow firefighters and the City he loved was not just a job, it was his calling; and

 

WHEREAS, Hugh McIntyre was one of eight firefighter souls who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow firefighters and the City of Philadelphia during the tragic 1975 Gulf Oil Refinery Fire. As a testament to his character and commitment, Hugh bravely gave his life to protect others; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the 800 block of Rhawn Street shall also be named "Hugh Joseph McIntyre Way" in recognition of his sacrifice during the 1975 Gulf Oil Refinery Fire.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Hugh Joseph McIntyre as a sign of the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
