Title

Recognizing the nomination of Arianna J. Freeman to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and encouraging her confirmation by the United States Senate.

 

Body

WHEREAS, On January 19, 2022, President Joseph Biden nominated Arianna J. Freeman to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third District; and

 

WHEREAS, Members of the federal judiciary must be extraordinarily qualified, experienced, and devoted to the rule of law and the United States Constitution; and

 

WHEREAS, Since 2016, Ms. Freeman has been a Managing Attorney with the Federal Community Defender Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she previously worked as an Assistant Federal Defender in the Non-Capital Habeas Unit and as a Research and Writing Specialist; and

 

WHEREAS, Prior to joining the Federal Community Defender Office in 2009, Ms. Freeman clerked for Judge C. Darnell Jones II and Judge James T. Giles, both of whom sat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Freeman is also a graduate of Yale Law School and Swarthmore College; and

 

WHEREAS, It is crucial to the integrity of our justice system that the nation’s courts reflect the personal and professional diversity that is one of our greatest assets as a country; and

 

WHEREAS, If confirmed by the United States Senate, Ms. Freeman would be the first African American woman - and the first woman of color - ever to serve on the Third Circuit; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Philadelphia, Does hereby recognize the nomination of Arianna J. Freeman to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and encourage her confirmation by the United States Senate.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Arianna J. Freeman as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
