Recognizing the work of the Action Alliance of Senior Citizens as it holds its 27th Annual Senior Power Convention.

WHEREAS, The Action Alliance of Senior Citizens of Greater Philadelphia is the largest coalition of senior citizen groups in Philadelphia, including 220 organizations with a combined membership of 110,000 older Philadelphians; and
WHEREAS, Action Alliance has united all segments of the senior citizen community, bringing together senior citizens of all races, religions, ethnic groups, income levels and from every neighborhood of the city to work together for the common good; and
WHEREAS, Over the years Action Alliance has won impressive gains for all senior citizens in Philadelhia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including the free and reduced fares on SEPTA, discounts on gas, water and sewer rates, the creation of the State Department of Aging, the establishment of the Elderly Victim Assistance Program, the Pharmaceutical Contract with the Elderly, and electric deregulation; and
WHEREAS, Action Alliance continues to this day to safeguard those gains, particularly the universal gas discount for seniors; and
WHEREAS, Action Alliance is also working to reform and expand Medicare to include an universal prescription drug benefit and to expand the income guidelines for PACE; and
WHEREAS, April 28, 2000 marks the holding of the 27th Annual Senior Power Convention of Action Alliance; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we recognize the work of Action Alliance and we join the thousands of members in the City celebrating this milestone; and
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Action Alliance and to its outgoing president, Mr. George DePasquale, as a tribute from the Council fo a job well done.
