WHEREAS, Veronica Joyner is the Founder and Chief Administrative Officer of The Mathematics, Civics, and Sciences Charter School in Philadelphia, Inc.(MCSCS), founded in 1999 as one of the largest charter schools in the state of Pennsylvania with a population of nearly one thousand students in grades first through twelfth; and
WHEREAS, MCSCS was recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as one of the City's top-ten schools out of more then three hundred public and charter schools in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School "Mighty Elephants" basketball team was founded in 2000; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Danny Jackson, head coach was a team member on the first basketball team at MCSCS; and
WHEREAS, Danny Jackson is the youngest head coach to win a State Championship; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia Charter Schools entered the Philadelphia public league and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) in 2006; and
WHEREAS, Senior and starting member of the MCSCS basketball team, Warren Dogan, finished with 18 points, five assists and two steals in 31 minutes; and
Whereas, Thomas Moore, also a senior, finished with eight points, six assists and five steals in 22 minutes; now therefore, be it
WHEREAS, The Might Elephants are the first team in District 12 to win the Class A Championship; and now therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Philadelphia City Council hereby Honors and Recognizes The Math, Civics & Sciences Charter School Basketball Team, the "Mighty Elephants" for Winning the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class A State Championship on March 25, 2011; and
