Also naming the intersection of 40th and Chestnut Street as “Darcenia Burrell Way” to honor the life and legacy of Darcenia V. Burrell and her lasting contributions to the community.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Darcenia V. Burrell was a devoted community leader, entrepreneur, and lifelong advocate for opportunity, inclusion, and service; and

 

WHEREAS, Following the passing of her husband, she became a young widow and successfully raised her three sons while taking over and managing Cliff’s Shoe Parlor, a longstanding family business; and

 

WHEREAS, For more than 40 years, Darcenia operated Cliff’s Shoe Parlor with excellence, building a respected institution known for quality service and as a welcoming cornerstone of the community; and

 

WHEREAS, Under her leadership, the business became a space of connection and dignity, serving residents from all walks of life and providing opportunities, including employment and skills, to individuals returning from incarceration; and

 

WHEREAS, Darcenia V. Burrell was widely recognized for her perseverance, compassion, and dedication to uplifting others, leaving a legacy that continues to impact the community; and

 

WHEREAS, Also naming the intersection of 40th and Chestnut Street in her honor would serve

as a lasting tribute to her leadership and ensure her legacy remains visible to future generations; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the intersection of 40th and Chestnut Street also be named “Darcenia Burrell Way” in honor of her life, service, and enduring impact on the community.
