Calling on one-million Americans to write President Bush, urging him to send a strong, multinational force to the Darfur region of the Sudan to stop the genocide occurring there.

WHEREAS, Philadelphia stands with the global community in recognizing the moral obligation to condemn genocide anywhere in the world including the Darfur region of the Sudan; and
WHEREAS, During the last three years in Darfur, 180,000 people have been killed and more than two million driven from their homes; and
WHEREAS, Seventy-five percent of South Darfur's villages have been destroyed; and
WHEREAS, Babies shot, bodies burned and villages leveled are labeled as atrocities by the Bush Administration; and
WHEREAS, Human rights groups are planning an anti-genocide demonstration in Washington, D.C. on April 30, 2006 to pressure the White House to place a multinational force in Darfur; and
WHEREAS, Demonstration organizers comparing this genocide to that in RWANDA, are urging one-million Americans to send President Bush a written message to use his power to submit a stronger multinational force to protect the citizens of Darfur; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That one-million Americans write President Bush, urging him to send a strong, multinational force to the Darfur region of the Sudan to stop the genocide occurring there.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President, Vice President and all members of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives.
