Recognizing and Congratulating the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation on the occasion of the Walk to Cure Diabetes.

WHEREAS, The Junior Diabetes Research Foundation is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder advocate of Type 1 Diabetes research; and
WHEREAS, Type 1 Diabetes is a disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or continuous infusion of insulin through a pump; and
WHEREAS, Insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke and amputation; and
WHEREAS, More than 3 million Americans have Type 1 Diabetes, the most severe form of the disease; and
WHEREAS, The Junior Diabetes Research Foundation is currently funding a study that will follow more than 7,000 newborns at increased genetic risk of developing diabetes and will collect vast amounts of data on potential environmental factors over a 15-year period to see which ones are associated with a greater or lesser risk of developing diabetes; and
WHEREAS, On October 24, 2010, the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation will host the Walk for a Cure which annually raises money for the research; and
WHEREAS, Many Philadelphians including Type 1 Diabetics and their families have benefited tremendously from the countless efforts from the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize and congratulate the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation on the occasion of the Walk to Cure Diabetes.
