Honoring cab driver Kehinde Akano and his wife Ninilola for their part in foiling a getaway from a jewelry store robbery.

WHEREAS, On October 16, 2000, two individuals hailed a taxi after robbing George's Golden Scale Jewelry Store on the first block of South Eighth Street; and
WHEREAS, Yellow Cab driver Kehinde Akano picked up the armed suspects in his cab and immediately became concerned by their suspicious behavior, so he called his wife on his cell phone; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Akano spoke to Ninilola in their native Yoruban language to avoid detection and asked her to call the police, and the police promptly closed in on the cab and arrested the pair, charging the suspects with robbery and weapons offenses; and
WHEREAS, By risking their lives to assist in upholding the law, Mr. and Mrs. Akano have set an impressive example for others, and if all citizens took such initiative, Philadelphia would be a much safer and better place to live; and
WHEREAS, As recent Nigerian immigrants, Mr. and Mrs. Akano also demonstrate how Philadelphia's immigrant communities make positive contributions to the City on a daily basis; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we honor cab driver Kehinde Akano and his wife Ninilola for their part in foiling a getaway from a jewelry store robbery.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Kehinde and Ninilola Akano, further evidencing the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
