WHEREAS, The USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) has just returned from a seven month deployment in support of the war on terror; and
WHEREAS, The USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) is a Los Angeles attack class submarine commissioned on June 25, 1977 that makes its home port in Groton, CT.; and
WHEREAS, The USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) is the first Los Angeles class submarine to complete 1,000 dives; and
WHEREAS, The USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) has a crew of 12 officers and 115 enlisted men and women; and
WHEREAS, The pride and work ethic of the USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) is evidenced in its receipt of the Golden Anchor award which is given to commands with superior retention rates; and
WHEREAS, The USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) is the sixth ship named after the city of Philadelphia including a Gondola built in 1776 that was lost in the Battle of Valcour Island, a sailing frigate active in the Quasi War and the First Barbary War, a side wheel steamer used in the Civil War, a protected cruiser that served from 1890 until 1926, and a light cruiser commissioned in 1937 that was active in World War II; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we honor the USS Philadelphia for its record of achievement and accomplishment in protecting the United States of America; and
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City Council of Philadelphia recognizes the service, dedication and courage of the crew of the USS Philadelphia (SSN 690); and
RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the officers and crew of the USS Philadelphia as evidence of the sincere respect and admiration of the city for which the USS Philadelphia is named.
