WHEREAS, The City Council of Philadelphia takes great pleasure in recognizing organizations that, contribute in a meaningful way to diversity, inclusion, and the wellbeing of their communities throughout the City of Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1958, Woodford Tennis Club, was formed during the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement by a select group of working class men and women who chose not to wait for inclusion, but instead, to create their own space; and
WHEREAS, The Woodford Tennis Club continues to foster safe spaces for the sport, uniting people of all ages who play tennis; and
WHEREAS, Based in Germantown, the Woodford Tennis Clubs network of friends and business associates come together to create and support community programs that champion health, academic and entrepreneurial ideals; and
WHEREAS, Woodford encourages positive social interaction hosting annual tournament competitions, clinics for all skill levels, individual and group lessons, youth summer camp and jazz brunches; and
WHEREAS, In all that they do, they contribute greatly to our community and the City of Philadelphia. Such organizations are integral to the functioning and wholesomeness of our City. Consequently, their services are highly indispensable; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Honors the Woodford Tennis Club for being the oldest Black-owned tennis club in the Country.
