Recognizing September 29, 2013- October 5, 2013 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Week in Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the second -most common diagnosed cancer for men living in the United States, and despite the progress we have made in research and treatment, the disease continues to take a devastating toll with more than 242,000 new cases and 29,000 deaths this year alone; and
WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is especially prevalent among African American men, who are 40% more likely to die from the disease than Caucasian men and Philadelphia ranks in the top 10% of urban areas for incidence and deaths in African Americans from prostate cancer; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia community has organized three significant events to raise awareness and funds during Prostate Cancer Awareness Week in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, On Sunday, September 29, 2013 over 100 churches will host Prostate Awareness Sundays during their worship services; and
WHEREAS, On Monday, September 30, 2013 Congressman Chaka Fattah will host Fattah's Prostate Cancer Golf Classic; and
WHEREAS, On Tuesday, October 2, 2013 the Philadelphia Prostate Cancer Research Foundation, with the support of the Congressional Black Caucus and other local leaders, will host its 11th Annual Philadelphia Prostate Cancer Event; and
WHEREAS, These events will raise awareness and dollars that will have a direct impact on the Philadelphia area; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Prostate Cancer Foundation is a champion and leader in prostate cancer research, raising more than $10 billion dollars and supporting more than 1,500 programs across the world; and
WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia is poised to become a national leader in the area of prostate cancer research with more than 5 medical institutions, the presence of the Philadelphia Prostate Cancer Foundation, and the efforts of a supportive network of elected officials, healthcare professionals and scholars, religious leaders, and co...
