WHEREAS, Dr. Sulayman Clark, author, lecturer, and education consultant is a native of Philadelphia who attended Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and earned a Master of Arts from Stanford University in the area of educational administration, planning and social policy; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sulayman Clark wrote The Rains: Voices for American Liberty, an historical novel inspired by the true events and heroism of a remarkable inter-faith and multi-racial group of men and women beginning in the Antebellum period through the Reconstructed era; and
WHEREAS, The Rains traces the history of Black education in America, including the quest for educational empowerment and the creation of the nation's first historically black colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS, The story is based in Philadelphia and most of the novel's characters were real life free persons of color formed a dynamic coalition of social activists who fought to eradicate slavery as a socially accepted and legalized practice; and
WHEREAS, The book has been added to the School District of Philadelphia's history curriculum, inspiring the students of our great City; and
WHEREAS, The Rains is particularly relevant in the Age of Obama as it brings history to life in a way that empowers and enlightens the reader; now therefore,
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors Author Dr. Sulayman Clark, author of The Rains: Voices for American Liberty.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Sulayman Clark for his inspiring and enlightening literary work, as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
