WHEREAS, The U.S. Women's Olympic Basketball Team led by three-time Olympian Dawn Staley captured its third consecutive gold medal during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games defeating the Australian Women's team by a score of 74-63; and
WHEREAS, Dawn Staley capped her 15-year USA Basketball career with her ninth gold medal in international competition, including a pair of World Championship golds; and
WHEREAS, As a team the U.S. ranked first among the 12-team tournament in nearly every major statistical category, including scoring offense, scoring defense, field goal percentage, rebounding, and steals; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the games the 2004 team replaced several team records including most rebounds in a single game, versus New Zealand and most 3 pointers made versus Greece; and
WHEREAS, Overall the U.S. rewrote single competition records for most field goals attempted, most 3-pointers made, highest free throw percentage, most blocked shots, and most steals; and
WHEREAS, With the victory over Australia in the gold medal game the U.S. upped its Olympic winning streak to 25 games and the USA now owns a 42-3 overall record in Olympic play and has won a record 5 golds; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNICL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we honor Dawn Staley and the United States Women's Olympic Basketball Team for winning the Gold Medal during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens Greece.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Dawn Staley, further evidencing the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
