Honoring the life and legacy of Ted Silary, for his lifelong dedication to the City of Philadelphia’s athletic community as a high school sports reporter.

WHEREAS, Ted Silary, 72, was a high school athletics reporter for three area publications for the last three decades: first for two years for the Philadelphia Bulletin then until 2013 for the Philadelphia Daily News, and finally for his alma mater William Penn Charter School, until his retirement in 2018; and
WHEREAS, Ted was known as a leader in high school athletics reporting, having interviewed thousands of players, coaches, and parents; and
WHEREAS, He was most well known for his reporting on high school boys’ basketball and football, though he reported on all high school sports. He has kept judicious records of high school athletics statistics; and
WHEREAS, Ted was a long-time advocate for athletes and, in particular, young athletes. He said that “there's nothing more enjoyable than reporting on the triumphs of young people”; and
WHEREAS, Ted was lauded by his peers, coworkers, athletes, and coaches for his impeccable work ethic, having tirelessly reported on the stories that matter to the athletic community and Philadelphians as a whole; and
WHEREAS, Ted Silary passed on Thursday, May 18 at the age of 72. After three decades of service, Ted will be greatly missed and his legacy will forever be felt; and
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor the life and legacy of Ted Silary, for his lifelong dedication to the City of Philadelphia’s athletics community as a high school sports reporter.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an engrossed copy be presented to the family of Ted Silary, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
