Honoring and celebrating Noel George Miles, Jr., AWS, for a distinguished career as one of Philadelphia's most accomplished and civically minded painters.

WHEREAS, Noel George Miles, Jr. is a native of West Philadelphia and graduate of Dobbins High School who grew up in the Richard Allen Projects and near the Stetson Hat Factory in North Philadelphia; and

WHEREAS, Noel George Miles, Jr. enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served as an intelligence analyst before being honorably discharged; and

WHEREAS, Noel George Miles, Jr. used the GI Bill to attend the University of the Arts where he studied with W. Emerton Heitland, who supported his nomination to the American Watercolor Society in 1964; and

WHEREAS, Noel George Miles, Jr. was the longtime art director of 6 ABC and CBS 3 and taught art courses at Drexel University, Temple University, the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Cabrini College, and the Philadelphia School District; and

WHEREAS, When Noel George Miles, Jr. presented a painting to the Prince of Wales, the British royal remarked to Miles that he was "not in your league;" and

WHEREAS, In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Philadelphia City Hall in 2001, Noel George Miles, Jr. collaborated with the City to create "The Splendors of Philadelphia's City Hall: An Artist's View," an art book showcasing a complete history of City Hall filled with more than 50 interior and exterior full-color images of City Hall, all created by Miles; and

WHEREAS, Noel George Miles, Jr. offered the now well-known painting of Philadelphia City Hall to the City for purchase, which has been used on official City Council citations and resolutions ever since; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and celebrates Noel George Miles, Jr., AWS, for a distinguished career as one of Philadelphia's most accomplished and civically minded painters.
