WHEREAS, Inspector Johnson, a lifelong resident of Southwest Philadelphia, received an associate's degree in nursing from Community College of Philadelphia and a bachelor's degree in health sciences from West Chester University; and

WHEREAS, Following his education, Inspector Johnson served in the United States Marine Corps, receiving an honorable discharge after rising through the ranks to a sergeant; and

WHEREAS, After completing the Police Academy in 1989, Inspector Johnson worked extensively throughout Philadelphia, holding several progressively responsible leadership positions in the Philadelphia Police Department; and

WHEREAS, During his impressive career, Inspector Johnson has worked for the Philadelphia Police Department in various leadership roles, most recently as the Commanding Officer of the Recruit Background Investigations Division since January 2023 after serving as the Commander of the Training & Education Services Division from March 2017 to January 2023; and

WHEREAS, Inspector Johnson's current role is his third command since being promoted in November 2012, with his first being the commander of the Southwest Police Division; and

WHEREAS, In 2003, the Philadelphia Police Department recognized Inspector Johnson for heroic actions by awarding him "The Medal of Valor", the Department's most prestigious medal for an Active Officer; and

WHEREAS, Inspector Johnson exemplifies service at its highest level, inspiring Philadelphia's future leaders in law enforcement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Honors Inspector Verdell Johnson for his retirement and years of service for the Philadelphia Police Department.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Inspector Verdell Johnson as evidence of the utmost gratitude of this legislative body.
