WHEREAS, Author, lecturer and cultural critic Michael Eric Dyson is joining the University of Pennsylvania faculty as an Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities and African-American Studies; and
WHEREAS, Professor Dyson is a rising name among African-American scholars and a true public intellectual; and
WHEREAS, Professor Dyson has written five acclaimed books, including Holler if You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur, and biographies of Malcolm X — Making Malcolm: The Myth and Meaning of Malcolm X — and Martin Luther King, Jr. — I May Not Get There With You; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his scholarly pursuits he teaches to a broader audience through frequent appearances on the television show Politically Incorrect and Tavis Smiley's National Public Radio show; and
WHEREAS, Professor Dyson is leaving his current appointment as Ida B. Wells-Barnett Professor and professor of religious studies at DePaul University to join the Philadelphia community; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor Professor Michael Eric Dyson on the occasion of his appointment as Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities and African-American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Professor Michael Eric Dyson as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body in welcoming him to the City of Brotherly Love.
