Honoring and recognizing City Year Philadelphia for its 25 years of service in Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, City Year's national organization was founded in 1988 by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, while the two were roommates at Harvard Law School. It was founded on the idea that people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing America's most pressing issues. Since its inception, City Year has promoted the vision of service as a common expectation - and a real opportunity - for citizens all around the world; and
WHEREAS, Founded with a dedication to serving the broader community, City Year quickly spread to Philadelphia, with the establishment of City Year Philadelphia in 1997; and
WHEREAS, In the 25 years since its founding, City Year Greater Philadelphia's team members and staff have worked tirelessly to improve educational outcomes for at-risk students across the City. City Year's data-driven program aims to identify students who may be at risk of dropping out of school and, through targeted mentoring, to encourage these students to continue with their education; and
WHEREAS, During their 25 years in Philadelphia, City Year has deployed over 3,500 team members who have served over 6.5 million hours in more than 100 schools and community organizations in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing the importance of education in the lives of young people, and understanding that educational attainment can be impacted by a variety of factors, both inside and outside of school, City Year's holistic mentoring program has been instrumental in helping students across the city of Philadelphia better achieve their potential; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and recognizes City Year Philadelphia for its 25 years of service in Philadelphia.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to City Year of Philadelphia as evidence of its esteem ...
