Recognizing, Honoring, And Celebrating Tioga United - On The Occasion Of It's 10th Anniversary: 2006 - For It's Mission Of Helping Rebuild The Tioga Community One Step At A Time.

WHEREAS, Tioga United was created from Unity Day Tioga which began in 1996 for the sole purpose of sponsoring an annual community festival to promote unity and pride; and
WHEREAS, After a few very successful festivals in the community, Tioga United decided there was a strong need for more concentration on the years of deterioration to their once vibrant and thriving community. So in 2001, they became incorporated as a non-profit 501C3 organization and re-organized as Tioga United; and
WHEREAS, Tioga United hosts monthly community meetings to generate support and began a data base of neighbors and interested parties to create a list of problems and concerns and began addressing them individually, such as complaints of dirty alleys, dumping issues, vacant lots, lack of communication, zoning issues and so forth; and
WHEREAS, The Tioga community is admired for its tree-lined streets with well kept lawns, friendly neighbors who are active in block clubs, block clean ups and welcoming of new neighbors; and
WHEREAS, Tioga United serves over 10,000 residents in the Tioga section of North Philadelphia via monthly meetings and the annual community festival; and
WHEREAS, The Tioga Unity Day festival, which occurs the 3rd Saturday of each September, is designed to provide a fun-filled day of activities for the entire family: where employment, health, financial, educational and recreational resources along with area and city-wide service information are made available to the festival participants; and
WHEREAS, In 2004, with the combined efforts of the Eighth Councilmatic Office and Tioga United, they were able to secure support from KaBoom! and Home Depot to rebuild the Jerome Brown Playground by obtaining new playground equipment; now therefore
