WHEREAS, Coxswain Pete Cipollone, along with oarsmen Bryan Volpenhein, Beau Hoopman, Dan Beery, Matt Deakin, Joseph Hansen, Chris Ahrens, Wyatt Allen and Jason Read became the first men's eight oars team in forty years to win the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics; and

WHEREAS, Pete Cipollone began his career as a rower while attending Saint Joe's Prep, and made his international competition debut coxing the men's four oars team to a 10th place finish at the FISA Junior World Championships; and

WHEREAS, As the coxswain on numerous national four and eight oars team, Mr. Cipollone is highly decorated on both the national and international rowing circuit, winning several bronze, silver and gold medals at international competitions and consistently finishing in the top tier at the national level as well; and

WHEREAS, Pete is a 12-time national team member and a two-time Olympian, and also bears the distinction of being a member of the eight oars national team which won three consecutive world championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999, a feat only accomplished once before and a first for the men's U.S. national rowing team; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Cipollone also served as a coach in the sport as he coached the men's single sculls at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Pete Cipollone is carrying on the family tradition of rowing as his father, Michael Cipollone, is also coxswain and a coach, and his stepmother, Gabi Kuhn-Cipollone, is a two-time rowing gold medalist from the former East Germany; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor Pete Cipollone on winning the Gold Medal in the Men's Eight Oars rowing competition at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, ...
