Recognizing Temple University's Temple 20/20 Scholarship Program.

WHEREAS, Temple College was founded in 1884 by Dr. Russell Conwell and became Temple University in 1907; and
WHEREAS, Temple University has evolved into a comprehensive urban research and academic institution with over 39,000 students at 9 campuses with 320 academic degree programs; and
WHEREAS, In 2009, one quarter of Temple students were from Philadelphia and one out of every eight college educated individuals in the Greater Philadelphia area has at least one degree from Temple University; and
WHEREAS, Temple University works closely with the School District of Philadelphia, the City of Philadelphia and many partners to prepare, recruit, enroll and graduate students in Philadelphia through efforts ranging from middle school early intervention to full scholarships; and
WHEREAS, Through the office of Community Relations, Temple University strives to be a beacon for community engagement through supporting volunteerism, hosting community organizations and providing direct services to University neighbors; and
WHEREAS, In 2011 Temple University created the 20/20 Scholarship Program which aims to increase the number of Philadelphians with college degrees beginning with the incoming fall 2011 freshman class; and
WHEREAS, The Temple 20/20 Scholarship Program has created 250 four year scholarships worth $5 million dollars to be awarded over 10 years to students in the North Philadelphia neighborhoods surrounding its main campus; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphians have benefitted tremendously from the efforts of Temple University to support educational opportunities for City residents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize Temple University's Temple 20/20 Scholarship Program.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Representatives of Temple University as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this ...
